Bassett Creek Project
The Loddon Prison crew have treated the weeds all the way from Golf Links Road up the creek into the new project area (map attached). Bassett Creek Map
During the weed spraying, the prisoners also removed old tyres from the creek. Landholders then dragged them through their properties and left on the side of the road for us to collect and dispose of.
Muckleford Seed Orchard
Would you like a seed orchard on your property? Seed orchards could provide our Landcare group with seed stock and supply our members with plants for habitat enhancement. I can apply for funding to set up a seed orchard but do need some-one to volunteer a few acres of land for the purpose. In return, you would have a lovely forested area on your land attracting birds and other fauna. Please contact Beth if you are interested.
Barbed wire fence removal project
Expressions of interest are being sought by Muckleford Catchment Landcare Group for anyone who wants to remove their external barbed wire fences.
Barbed wire fencing is dangerous for native fauna. Although we don’t have funding to replace the barbed wire with more wildlife friendly fencing, we can help you take down your old fences, especially for those landholders who don’t have stock.

Muckleford Landcare Feb Committee Meeting Minutes
Here are the minutes from the Committee’s recent meeting. As mentioned in the minutes, on Sunday, Dave, Chris, Nev and Beth did a walk on Bassett Creek to ground-truth our upcoming project. We will now start talking to landholders about restoration activities on the Stage 2 section of the creek, as supported by the North Central CMA. Muckleford Landcare AGM and Xmas Breakup
It’s on tonight everyone – 5pm at The Hub garden. The garden is behind The Hub building which is on 233 Barker Street, but the entry to the garden is on Templeton Street.
Bird Count
Five Muckleford Landcare members took part in the Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club annual bird count on the weekend.
Eleanor, Albi, Theo, Neville and Beth braved the unusually cold morning to survey the Castlemaine golf course. We found 155 birds in total and 44 different species.
The highlight occurred the next day when Deb Worland and her son Chris (regular bird monitors at the golf course) gave us a tip-off about some powerful owls and we all ran back to sight and record them in the survey as well. Eleanor and Albi took some beautiful photos http://www.gypsytwitchers.com
If people are interested, we could make this a whole of landcare group activity next year – we’ll put it on the agenda at the AGM.
