Also symptomatic of anything for free in conservation management. And has created a hand out mentality instead of supporting the experience and integrity of local c.l.m. specialists
We have in this shire a specialist builder of these boxes who has been generous with his knowledge with Muckleford landcare and the wider community over many years, working in the development of materials and habitat requirements for specific species. Then along comes the prison and we are supposed to screw a local small business for their product. Well i for one will not be supporting this proposal on ethical grounds.
Placement of the boxes requires some specialist knowledge re box positioning, vegetation community, p.p.e equipment including in some cases pulley systems etc.
I would assume there would be an uproar if the prison opened a coffee shop in the town and then gave away coffees and food for free.
Thanks David. I agree with your comments re ‘hand-out mentality’. I have worked in the environment sector, both NGO and Gov., for many years and encounter this mindset from individuals and groups alike. It devalues the knowledge and expertise that people like myself have to offer and, frankly, will ultimately put us out of business. No-body will gain from this long term. Prisons should stick to what they are good at. – Miles
