More Landcare Planting

With the help of their friends and some Muckleford Landcare members, new Landcare members Tamara and Bev planted 500 trees and shrubs on their property as part of the Creating Connectivity Project, funded by the NCCMA.

If you would like to help out on the next planting, more new members Chris and Jasmine will be putting in their 500 plants this Sunday. Email Beth for the details – you can always pop down for an hour or two in order to lend a hand, get some exercise, and planting experience.

Creating Connectivity Planting Days

Four properties are taking part in our 2023 project, funded by the NCCMA, called Creating Connectivity. Landowners will be given 500 plants to make connections across their land to the roadside vegetation.

The first property will be planting on Saturday 7th October, starting at 11am. If you would like to help them out, please contact Beth for the address – email me

Property visit this Sunday

We look forward to seeing Muckleford Landcare members and guests in Walmer this Sunday, 10th September, 1.30pm, for a ‘sticky beak’ tour of one of our members’ property. You will see and hear about the restoration and forestry planting they have done in a casual walk and talk.

We will have lots of free guides available including flora, reptiles, birds, and the new orchid guide by the Australian Plants Society.

Email Beth for the address.

What’s happening in Muckleford/Walmer

We had a lovely bushwalk in the Maldon forest with Friends of the Box Ironbark forests. Start looking out for the wildflowers, as everything is beginning to bloom – Leopard Orchids, Greenhoods, and Early Nancies.

Our next Landcare event is Sunday 10th September, 1.30pm. We will have a ‘sticky beak’ on a property belonging to members, Dave and Elli. They are restoring ex-farming land – their property is 100ha, they have now put in over 9,000 plants (mix of forestry and reveg) and spent over $50,000 on restoration. Come and see what they’ve done and hear their story. Here is a link to an article we did last year.

Afternoon tea will be provided, and all Landcare members will receive a free copy of the new orchid brochure produced by the Bendigo Native Plant Group and the Australian Plants Society.

Please RSVP to Muckleford Landcare Secretary Beth Mellick to receive the address.

Thanks to Bernard Slattery and Euan Moore from the FOBIF walk for the photos (Thin-leaf Wattle, Tall Greenhood, Damselfly, Golden Moth orchid, Slime Mould, Leopard Orchid)

Planting for net zero

Community Carbon – Growing to net zero in Central Victoria

The North Central CMA, in collaboration with the City of Greater Bendigo, Macedon Ranges, Hepburn, and Mount Alexander Shire Councils, is embarking on a new pilot project within the region.

‘Community Carbon’ is aimed at exploring the feasibility of delivering local revegetation planting to generate carbon offsets while also providing environmental, social, and economic benefits to the local community.  The initiative aims to leverage the carbon offset needs of local councils to support revegetation efforts – restoring critical habitats, connecting fragmented landscapes and addressing biodiversity loss.

Putting the call out to interested landowners

The first stage of this pilot project is to seek expressions of interest from local landholders.  There is a particular focus on sites where the combined planting area is 10 hectares or more, however, smaller sites will still be considered.

Unlike typical revegetation projects, the focus is twofold: using carbon from plantings to offset emissions and to revegetate precious native habitats.  Therefore, to participate landholders must also be willing to transfer the carbon rights from their plantings to the delivery partners.

Click here to see details on the project guidelines and eligibility criteria.

If you’re interested in playing a part in helping reduce local carbon emissions and enjoying the benefits of increased habitat on your property, apply now.

A fact sheet about the program is available here.

This initial call for EOIs closes on 30 September 2023.

Bushwalk this Sunday

Nev and Beth from Muckleford Landcare are leading a walk with the Friends of the Box Ironbark Forests this Sunday, 20th August, in the Maldon forest. It’s the same place as our wildflower walk last year, however, no wildflowers out yet.

FOBIF walkers meet at 9.30am outside 30 Templeton Street, Castlemaine (Castlemaine Community House) and carpool to the start of the walk. Bring water, morning tea and lunch. However, Muckleford Landcare members are welcome to meet us on site as below:

Starting at the corner of Donkey Farm Track and Railway Track in Muckleford North, this 10 km walk will follow the Victorian Goldfields Tourist Railway track towards Maldon, then loop back through the Maldon Historic Reserve.

National Landcare Week

Muckleford Landcare is getting ready for our upcoming planting project, a wildflower walk, bat talk, and property visit. We’ll be sharing resources like plant lists and bush food information on our website soon. Our members can also get free guides by letting us know what information they’re interested in. Stay tuned for more updates!

Weed Machines

Muckleford Landcare committee members, Eleanor and Albi, tackle roadside weeds whenever they are out and about. But specifically they are our Wheel Cactus controllers for Muckleford.

If you see wheel cactus on roadsides, please contact us and we’ll send our crack team to deal with them.
